但是，所有以上的讨论范畴应该限定在当事人造成损失并不大的情况下。如果当事人造成了重大财产损失甚至威胁到了公共安全，诸如破坏公共交通，那么理应进行赔偿甚至判处坐牢作为刑罚。这样的处罚对于当事人及其他人有更大的震慑作用，加大犯罪成本，能够防止其再犯或者减少潜在的违法行为。

Some people assume that the offenders of vandalism should be sentenced to community services rather than other punishments; however, I would say it is this conviction is erroneous while ignoring contexts.  

Those championing the community sentences opt to venerate this penalty as a panacea to all individuals defacing public assets. From their perspective, compulsory unpaid work for local communities is most effective in rehabilitating the offenders: the services not only change their misbehaviors, but also give them an opportunity to learn to be a contributive member of society. In contrast, a fine penalty or imprisonment is considered to nothing more than a pure deterrent.  

While the advantages for a social order for vandalism does seem plausible, it is generalized to assume it necessarily better than other options. Which type of penalty deserve more justification should not be judged in the abstract, but in relation to various factors in the real context, whether these be the material value of the damage or the potential repercussions on the populace. For example, if the costs of the destructed property were enormous, pure community services coupled with a fine would be more suitable option. By the same token, in case the crime posed threat to public safety, the criminals would deserve more serious punishment such as imprisonment.  

From what has been discussed, it is my conclusion therefore, it is simplistic to venerate community sentences over other option in addressing vandalism, while the most effective punishing option should be discussed in contexts.
